My Baby Sister

As you all know by now, I have 2 sisters. My baby sister just celebrated the ripe old age of 31. And if that doesn’t make many of you feel old by comparison, then I don’t know what will. Wait, yes I do. She has 3 kids and one of them is going to be 11 this year. Ugh.

As far as sisters go, she and I manage to get along pretty well. Having 5 years between us has presented some challenges over the years, but never anything we couldn’t work through. My relationship with her is very different in some respects than it is with my other sister. I think since Autumn and me are so close in age, we naturally have some similarities in both perspective and experiences that Lydia didn’t get the same opportunity to share. Growing up she was my brother’s sidekick and partner in crime much as Autumn was for me.

I had already moved out of the house by the time she went through her high school years, which I think we can all agree are pretty turbulent. When I think back on that time period, I know I was a typical kid who was more interested in what was going on in my own life (college) than I was in her high school experience. That time is kind of a blur for me in those respects. I had the opportunity to stay put in one high school, and I think she may have ended up in 3 different ones. I may be wrong on that, but I know it was at least 2.

Physically, she was like a spider when she was little- all arms and legs. Both of my sisters got the long legs in this family. She was always a super skinny kid and very accident prone. The good news is that she is really good to have around in an emergency because experience has taught her to not be easily rattled. The bad news may be that the scars probably kept her from a lucrative modeling career. I have often thought she embodied all the physical traits I wish I could change in myself.

Here is one of my favorite pictures of her. I just think she looks adorable. I also see a bit of both of her daughters in this picture. It’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that she has 3 kids. She is always going to be my baby sister. Happy Birthday!!!!

My "little" sister turned 32 last month. Everytime she has a birthday I feel older than when I have one!

Yeah. I tried to tell her my strategy for letting my hair go white after I turn 40 and she said she didn't want to think about me being that age.

So am I jumping the gun by letting my whites show so soon?!

You can do whatever you want. I'm not ready to start growing it all out yet. Although....Lydia did call me to tell me she went and got her hair done. I figure in another 4 years I will have enough there to make it interesting. Until then? Only my hairdresser knows.
